FAQ / What to Expect from the New York DMV /
The DMV provides everyone a safe and convenient opportunity to register to vote or update their voter registration online. As part of a 2012 initiative to increase voter registration in New York, residents are able to conveniently use the DMV Electronic Voter Registration Application to register for the first time or make changes to their current voter information. If you are already registered to vote, you do not need to register again.
The purpose of this initiative was to expand access to voter registration in New York. Before having the option to register online, the DMV would process all of the forms manually. This process was time-consuming and prone to human error as all paper forms had to be handwritten and mailed by hand to the Board of Elections. This new system consolidated all of the forms and allowed applications to be submitted digitally, which improved both efficiency and effectiveness.
When you renew your NY driver’s license online, you will be asked if you’d like to register to vote regardless of whether you are already registered or not. You are not required to register to vote to complete your online driver’s license renewal. If you’re not sure if you’re registered to vote, you can check here. You can also register to vote at any time here if you choose not to do so while renewing your driver’s license.
You can take the required vision test online!
In order to register to vote through the DMV’s website you will need your driver’s license and document number as well as your zip code. Please note that your ID number is 9 digits and all numbers and your document number is 8 or 10 characters with a combination of letters and numbers. You will also need your Social Security number.
If you get an error message make sure that you’re entering your document number and zip code correctly. If you’ve moved, you’ll need to update your address with the DMV before you complete your renewal online. If you enter a zip code that’s not registered with the DMV, you’ll get an error message.
Once you complete your online registration, the DMV takes care of submitting it to your County or City Board of Elections for review. You will be notified within 6 weeks if your registration was successful or if additional information is needed. Keep in mind that the DMV does not approve or deny any applications. If you do not hear back within that time please contact your County Board of Elections.
